Tähtipöllö Reading competition
WEBSITES, CAMPAIGN SITES, GAMIFICATION
Starting point:
Our client, Kustannusosakeyhtiö Otava, wanted to inspire elementary school students to read and improve their reading skills by organizing a national reading competition. Reading ability and changes in reading habits among children and young people have been a topic of discussion in Finnish classrooms, homes, and even in the media. Otava’s goal was to actively encourage students to read more and to make reading fun and appealing.
Tähtipöllö gamified reading. School students read over 18 million pages!
Solution:
We designed a competition website, Tähtipöllö, and the technical implementation was made on WordPress platform. The site allows teachers to log in and record their class’s reading progress. The competition leaderboard on the site lets participants follow the progress, which can increase motivation and competitive spirit. The website also provides competition instructions and rules, as well as inspiring reading tasks and book recommendations for readers at different levels.
In the Tähtipöllö competition, classes compete based on the number of pages read. The winning classes are awarded a cash prize to be used for collective class purchases, and book prizes are raffled among all participants. In the first competition, over 400 Finnish elementary school classes participated, reading a total of more than 18 million pages.
Almost 20 million pages read is a fantastic number! The purpose of Tähtipöllö is to inspire school classes to read, and it is a great pleasure to notice that it has succeeded. And even though the competition is over at this point, we hope that the enthusiasm for reading in schools and homes is just as amazing.

The Tähtipöllö competition will continue in 2024.
